A dog should have a smooth, soft and slightly moist nose. However, some dogs have an abnormal cornering of the nose which makes the nose dry and irregular. Painful fissures and bleeding can occur in this. Such a dry nose can occur due to a skin disease, but it also sometimes occurs spontaneously. With the help of the right means, the cornering of the nose can be controlled. You can click here to know more about it.
The dog's nose
The nose or the cap of the dog is covered with a special kind of epidermis, which is thicker than elsewhere and does not contain any hair follicles. The nose mirror should be smooth and soft, slightly moist and with the appearance of a cobblestone path.
Hyperkeratosis
Sometimes the cornering of the nose level goes crazy: this is called hyperkeratosis. A thick, irregular edge of the horn will appear on the nose, which is drier than normal. Cracks and fissures can occur. If a blood vessel gets involved in such a tear, bleeding can occur that is sometimes difficult to stop.
How does a dog get a dry nose?
Hyperkeratosis of the nose can occur as part of skin disease, such as leishmaniasis or pemphigus. Sometimes it is also just a matter of aptitude, especially with the Labrador, this often happens.
What can you do about it?
If your dog has a dry, irregular nose surface, ask your veterinarian if he or she will find out if there is a cause for this. If there is no cause, treat the nose so that it becomes soft and supple again. If there is a lot of excess horn, you can remove it with salicylic acid oil or propylene glycol. Always do this in consultation with your veterinarian because the abnormal cornering simply continues, you must then properly maintain the nose.
Description
Palmoplantar hyperkeratosis is a condition of the skin on the foot pads, where the epidermis is too strongly horned. The soles of the feet are therefore hard and smooth, with cracks and fissures occurring. This can cause inflammation and pain, causing the dog to walk lamely. The risk of bacterial infections due to the affected skin on the soles of the feet is also greater.
Diagnosis
The diagnosis is made on the basis of the symptoms and findings during the physical examination, possibly supplemented with further examination of the skin on the footpads biopsy.
Therapy
The treatment consists of removing excessively keratinized skin and softening the skin with special ointments. In some cases, it requires long-term treatment.
Clinical picture
Due to a shortage of thyroid hormone, resulting in a decrease in metabolic activity, you see weight gain despite calorie-limiting measures, lethargy, disinterest and inactivity, listlessness, weakness and chastity seeking heat.
Also, skin complaints like symmetrical alopecia usually without, sometimes with itching, pyoderma, folliculitis, seborrhoea, post clipping alopecia, poor hair quality, hyperpigmentation, myxedema, and hyperkeratosis is important to take care of. Susceptibility to Demodex and Malassezia infections is increasing. It also caused increased appetite, drink normally.
Cause
The most common form of hypothyroidism in the dog is primary hypothyroidism the cause lies in the thyroid gland itself. There are destruction and replacement with fat or connective tissue of thyroid parenchyma. That is why there is a shortage of thyroid hormone. The 'deeper' cause is unknown inflammation, hereditary. There is never actually malignancy.
